Some of the best deals on used equipment come from private sellers. Many buyers don't realize those machines can be financed too. Here's how it works.
Will lenders finance a machine from a private seller?
Yes. Many banks only finance dealer purchases, but specialized equipment lenders routinely fund private-party deals. The machine itself is the collateral, so the lender cares mostly about its value, condition and age, plus your credit and business history.
How does the process work?
- Pre-qualify before you negotiate, so you know your budget and can make a confident offer.
- Agree on a price with the seller and collect the machine details: year, make, model, serial number, hours and photos.
- The lender reviews the deal, may verify the machine and checks for existing liens.
- Sign the documents, and the lender pays the seller directly, sending any payoff to the seller's lender first.
- Take delivery with a signed bill of sale.
How much down payment will I need?
It depends on your credit, time in business and the machine. Down payments of 10–20% are common for used equipment, and well-qualified borrowers sometimes qualify for less. See credit requirements for equipment financing.
Are there age or hour limits?
Many lenders prefer used machines roughly under 5–10 years old, or have hour guidelines, though the cutoffs vary by lender and equipment type. Older machines in good condition can still be financed, often with shorter terms or a larger down payment.
What documents will I need?
- A credit application. For larger amounts, add business bank statements or financials.
- Machine details and photos, plus the seller's contact information.
- A purchase agreement or bill of sale.
- Proof of insurance before funding.
Should I lease or finance a private-party machine?
Both can work. An Equipment Finance Agreement means you own the machine at the end. A lease can lower the monthly payment. Compare them in lease vs. finance and FMV vs. $1 buyout leases.
Does financing help sellers too?
Very much so. A seller gets paid in full by the lender rather than waiting on a buyer to raise cash, and the lender handles the lien payoff. That's why every EquipMarket listing connects buyers to financing.
How do I apply for equipment financing through EquipMarket?
