How Do I Sell Used Heavy Equipment? Answers to the Questions Every Seller Asks

Selling a used machine is usually a large transaction, and most owners only do it a few times. Below are the questions we hear most often from contractors, farmers and fleet managers who are getting ready to sell an excavator, dozer, wheel loader, skid steer or other heavy iron.

What are my options for selling used heavy equipment?

There are four main routes:

  • Private-party sale. You list the machine, talk to buyers and close the deal yourself. You keep the most money but do the most work.
  • Consignment or brokered sale. A dealer or broker markets the machine for a commission. Traditional consignment usually costs about 10–20% and can take 30–90 days.
  • Auction. Auctions are fast and certain, but the price is whatever the room pays that day. Buyers also pay a premium on top, which tends to push bids down.
  • Dealer trade-in. This is convenient, but you'll normally get wholesale value.

On EquipMarket you can list your equipment for free and sell it yourself. Or choose a managed listing, where we handle marketing and buyer screening for a 6–10% commission that you only pay if the machine sells. For a full comparison, read consignment vs. auction vs. private sale.

How do I price my machine?

Start with recent comparable sales: the same make and model, a similar year, similar hours and similar condition. Hours, undercarriage wear, service records and attachments move the price more than anything else. Our free Equipment Value Estimator gives you a data-informed range in seconds. If your machine sits at the top of that range, back up your asking price with service records and a condition report.

What paperwork do I need to sell heavy equipment?

  • Proof of ownership: the original purchase invoice, a prior bill of sale, or a title if your state titles that type of equipment.
  • A lien payoff letter if the machine is still financed. See selling equipment that still has a loan.
  • Service and maintenance records.
  • A signed bill of sale at closing.

Should I get an inspection before I list?

Yes, when you can. Serious buyers will want to know the condition of the engine, hydraulics, undercarriage and structure. A third-party equipment condition report answers those questions before buyers ask, cuts down on lowball offers and builds trust with remote buyers. Managed EquipMarket listings come with a free Condition Report and Bill of Sale.

How do I take photos that sell?

Shoot in daylight and take 20 or more photos: all four sides, the cab, the hour meter, the serial plate, the engine bay, the hydraulic cylinders, the undercarriage or tires, and each attachment. Add a short video of a cold start and of the machine running through its functions. Clean the machine first, because a pressure-washed machine looks well cared for.

How do I get paid safely?

Use traceable, verifiable payment: a bank wire you've confirmed with your own bank, a cashier's check you've verified with the issuing bank, or lender-funded financing. Don't release the machine until the funds have cleared. Our guide to safe payment in a private equipment sale covers the common scams.

Will offering financing help me sell faster?

Usually it does. Most buyers finance equipment purchases, so a listing that shows a monthly payment draws far more qualified inquiries than a cash-only one. Every EquipMarket listing can send buyers straight into a financing application, so you're selling to people who already have approved funds.

How do I apply for equipment financing through EquipMarket?

Financing is built into EquipMarket for buyers and sellers. Buyers can pre-qualify through our lending partner, Southend Capital, with one short application. Terms run 24 to 72 months, and you can choose an Equipment Finance Agreement (finance-to-own), a traditional lease, a 10% fair-market-value lease or a $1 buyout lease. Sellers benefit too: a buyer who is already approved can close quickly and pay in full.

Apply for financing now → or compare financing options and estimate a payment. Rates and approval are set by the lender based on your credit, time in business and the machine.
